Steven asks…
why am I losing weight but not inches?
In the past 2 months I have lost 20 lbs.
How I lost the weight was by walking 30 minutes every day, weight lifting or little bits of aerobic or yoga to switch things up.
I also changed my diet- not drinking pop
(which before I had bout 5-8 cans of pop a day), drinking extra water (10 glasses a day), switching to healthier foods ( ie- no burger king/mc donalds. , more salads, lean meats, grilled not fried, veggies, fruits whole grains etc.) and switching to sugar free candy.
I understand that I might be losing inches in other parts of my body, as I have only been recording my waist measurements, BUT after 20 lbs of weight loss you would think I would see some difference in my waist. And there doesnt seem to be any difference in how my clothes are fitting. the legs of my jeans arent getting any looser, sleeves are still just as tight, butt is the same size, I cant even see a difference in my face, it still looks just as round and double-chin-ish as before.
Why am I losing weight and not inches?
Is this normal?
How long does it normally take to start seeing a difference in inches?

Drae answers:
How noticeable weight loss is through measurement or just observation has more to do with the distribution of the loss over the body than it does with the amount of weight. You could easily notice a 20 pound loss if it was, for example, all in the abdomen. However, if it was spread over your body from the elbows to the knees, you would likely not notice it.
You probably have many more pounds to lose because fat is generally builds from the waistline up and down the body covering everything from internal organs to marbling in your muscles (intramuscular) to subcutaneous deposits (under the skin). Because fat loss begins receding from the outer reaches of the body and finishes around the waistline the first 20 pounds may not be noticeable but the last 20 pounds, which will come from a much smaller area around the waist, will be.
When people lose fat they may notice the loss in many way from finding hard surfaces increasingly uncomfortable to sit on to a sloshing around in their abdomens if the fat has increased the volume of the peritoneum. They may feel bony places they hadn’t noticed before including ribs or the coccyx (tail bone), etc. But, certainly they will eventually notice clothes are loosening, their mirror reflection is slimming, and, best of all, their friends are paying them compliments about their new svelt appearance.
Good luck and good health!!

Lisa asks…
Weight lifing? help plz?
I’m 15 years old…just turned 15 in February…I’ve only been weight lifting 3 times in my entire life… My arms are twigs… I can almost fit my hand around my bicept.. I always wear long sleeves, and sweatshirts because I’m so self concious about my arms…. I get depressed about it…. I live in a small town of 1500, and go to an all in one school. (elm, middle school, highschool) I’m a freshman. Pretty much all, yes, all..of the guys in my school are stuck up jocks and have big biceps, and are in football, basket ball, track, and go weighlifting. I’m scared to weightlift at school because i don’t wanna be made fun of, and I have noone to help me cuz they’re busy with themselves and sports..this is the only place i can go to work out in public that’s near by….i wanna get bigger arms by summer…when would i have to start to notice results…how do I approach this? Thanks.

my diet well My secret is eating clean ALL year. In the off season I enjoy one cheat meal a week, but during the contest season, it’s game time! In the off season I learned to not be afraid of carbs, this was very hard for me to accept. But, the end result was an increase in lean muscle.
I get my carbs from oats, cream of wheat, brown rice, and plain rice cakes. I taper out my carbs by the evening.
My protein sources come from chicken, lean turkey, lean hamburger, cod, salmon, tuna, egg whites and whey protein.
I could not survive my contest diet without: sugar free popsicles, crystal light, sugar free jelly, sugar free maple syrup and cinnamon.
1) Keep motivated and always strive to make yourself look better
2) Set your goals and stick to them until you reach you goal
3) Stick to a clean diet
4) Join a gym and incorporate a weight training and cardio routine
5) Train Abs three times weekly
hope i have helped bud just remember there is no magic pill takes hard work and time but stick at it your get there and dont compare yourself to the jocks etc compare yourself to someone who has trained the same time has you you get there trust just get going it hard but if it was easy everyone would be massive lol

Charles asks…
Spiritually speaking; please help me gain weight! I can’t gain weight, I’m severely underweight what should..?
I am very insecure about my appearance and the fact I am 30 pounds underweight is making it worse. I wear long sleeves to cover up my arms because they’re so skinny, it’s not comfortable to wear long sleeves, I live in Southern California and it’s hot as hell right now. I know for a fact I’m underweight, I’m 6′ 0″ and weigh 130 pounds, I’m 21 and I’m consuming 2000 calories a day. It’s hard and almost impossible to eat more than that. My stomach simply can’t hold anymore food, I eat till I feel like I’m going to puke. I’ve tried lifting weights and not doing any exercise to see if that could help me gain ANY weight at all. What do I do, I’ve seen my doctor and he says it’s related to stress, well I can’t do anything about how much stress I’m under. My life is going to be hard for the next couple of years, so what can I do to combat the weight loss from stress.

Drae answers:
You should try eating more, but I think you look great.
In fact I would totally marry you.

Paul asks…
Will i lose weight like this?
Alright, this is gonna be long. I’m just short of being 18 (i graduated high school, and turn 18 in august). I’m 5′ 6″ or 5′ 7″. Not entirely sure which as i havent had my height checked in a while, but my dad knows that he’s 5′ 6″ and im around his height, maybe just a tad taller. also im 195 lbs. This seems quite heavy and i know that i AM still fat. However, im not as fat as you’d expect, you can see some shape to my body. As i used to work out a lot. I had a weight lifting class so i was lifting weights 4 days a week, and running, and playing basketball on the the 5th day in school. That was sophmore year though, and i JUST graduated. So i wanna thin up a bit and buff my arms a bit before i get my sleeve tattoos (a bit of a ways off, as i need to save up a hefty sum of cash first, and turn 18).
So 5′ 6″ 195 lbs, and almost 18. Fairly fast metabolism (i am a teenager after all). work out highly infrequently and drink a lot of soda, without gaining weight so i think i have a somewhat fast metabolism.
So down to my actual question. Sorry for the rambling. If i start lifting weights, and swimming regularly. Maybe do some different cardio to switch it up. While eating more food made at home, and less take out. Do you think i’ll start to lose weight? I’m not in any real hurry. I probably have 6 months or so before i’ll want the results. Probably 25-30lbs. If i really need to do a good diet. My parents have one that’s been really effective for them, and i can do that. However im hoping just making home made food and working out will do the job. Any advice?
Bench max last i check (sophomore year lol): 200lbs. (180lbs was my weight at the time).
Squat Max last i checked (sophomore year again, my knees are injured): 220 lbs.
I don’t know any other checks. Thanks for all advice.
Also thanks for reading this giant wall of text lol. Sorry if i rambled a bit, all constructive advice/criticism is appreciated!

Drae answers:
You have to make sure the home cooked meals are actually healthy. Lot’s of things made at home can be packed with calories and fat. Focus on lean proteins and fruits and veggies and stay away from creamy dressings or sauces. I’m sure you know what’s healthy and what’s not. And cut the soda out of your diet! That is NOT healthy no matter how fast your metabolism is. Stick to water!
