Your Questions About Personal Trainer Jobs

William asks…

How do you become a personal trainer?

I love working out so people have told me to become a personal trainer for a job to work through college. So is this a good idea and how would i go about doing this?

Drae answers:

Becoming a personal trainer is very easy and rewarding! Its a great thing to look into. I have given you a few links that explain all about personal trainers and what they do and how much they could get paid and the day to day lifestyle they have. Classes to learn how to become one are usually short and you can get certified in no time at all. There is a spot where you can just put in your zip code and a whole bunch of schools will come up that are near you that offer this as a course. Like I said its a great career to get into and you can make your own hours. Good luck! I hope this helps out!

For Personal Trainers – What type of first job did you have?

I’m about to go out and look for my first personal trainer job and am wondering what to expect. What type of place did you work for, and what did you do? Were you allowed to shadow the first couple of days? Also, did they give you beginning clients to work with?

Thanks!

Drae answers:

Congratulations on joining the ranks of fitness professionals!

I started my personal training after completing the Physical Education degree program at Bridgewater State College.

My first job was as a part-time Personal Trainer at a large health club in the Northeast United States. Most large chain health clubs now offer orientation classes for their new fitness hires, so you won’t be completely thrown right into the fire.

Following this course, you’re normally allowed to begin some training while you study for a nationally recognized Personal Training certification.

Depending upon the program used, you may be responsible for acquiring the bulk of your client base through your own sales skill. This is generally the most discomforting part of the job requirements for Personal Trainers who do not have previous sales experience.

I hope that is helpful.

Great luck on your fitness journey,
Boh

What is a job related to personal trainer or massage therapist, that requires college/uni education?

I want to be a personal trainer or a massage therapist, but my parents want me to go to college. What could I do, which would not require me to work in a hospital?

Drae answers:

Here is something to consider. Both a personal trainer certification and a massage therapy certification/license (depending on your state) can be accomplished within a year. Some schools that teach massage also have a personal training certification program. So, the first year into post-secondary education, you can train and explore the idea of being a personal trainer and a massage therapist. After that first year, you will have available to you very flexible and very profitable part-time opportunities with personal training and massage. [Compare this to a $6-$9 per hour job in food service, etc. You could be spending less time working, earning $15-$30 per hour depending on the situation.] Then, the second year of schooling can be dedicated to a degree track (i.e. Pre-physical therapy, pre-med, etc.) which will further strengthen your knowledge in the sciences behind the personal training and massage work you are already putting into practice. A business degree can even complement what you are doing if you want to manage or own a business. Look at the trade schools as a beginning rather than an ultimate career. I agree with your parents that you should complete college since those years you are in college teach you much more about life beyond the academics. Many students take 5-6 years to finish a bachelor’s degree anyway. However, at the end of your 5-6 six years you would have a personal training certification, a massage license, a bachelor’s degree and roughly 4-5 years of practical experience, if you followed this plan. For a new college grad, this would be very, very marketable for either a career decision or even additional schooling (PT school, MED school, Chiropractic College, etc.). There are many healthcare opportunities available without needing to work in a hospital. Best wishes…

What is a great online Certified Personal Trainer site?

I heard of ACE and NASM but is there a website where I can just buy the books/DVD and when I am ready, take the test? Is there a great demand for certified personal trainers as a job or business? How does it work starting your own business? Etc?

Drae answers:

I am an ISSA Certified Personal Trainer.I spend close to 600$ on the course applied to probably 30 gyms only had 2 interviews.Personal training is not something u can really count on unless u know a lot of people who want you to train them.If not go look into someone else.Ace and nasm are good course i would choose ace since its widely accepted than nasm. ISSA is the easiest personal training course.I never read the book or anything just took the test online from my home it was easy since i know my stuff.

24 Hours Fitness Personal Trainer Job?

I had wonder what is the “minimum requirement” that the application speaks of. My certification is at work. Nevertheless, I still have school, and I am a full time undergraduate college student; thus would it possible for me to work only on Friday and Saturday?

Drae answers:
