Your Questions About Personal Trainer

Sharon asks…

What gym should a personal trainer work for?

This is a question for experienced personal trainers. After researching LA Fitness, Gold’s Gym, 24 Hour Fitness and such, it seems that 70% of the job is sales. Also the pay looks to be borderline minimum wage. Is this true? Not going to get a PT Cert to be a miserably paid salesman, so do you work for a gym that is purely based on personal training? Or is being an independent trainer the real way to go?

Drae answers:

Up to you, i work out at a smallish gym near my home, and i know the personal trainers are sometimes the only people there running it are the personal trainers although they usually have a client and just leave up a sign saying go to back office if you need assistance and they just keep an eye on it. Again not a personal trainer myself, but i’d say best bet is to try being an independent trainer however if you struggle for business etc then move on to work for a gym. However you could do the reverse which would help build up a client base, as if long as your charming and people find your really helping them then they will be reluctant to change trainer

Mandy asks…

How much does a personal trainer costs in santo domingo?

I am looking for a cheap or affordable personal trainer in santo domingo, anybody knows one? How much they usually cost there?

I used to have a personal trainer that charged $100 per month, i wonder if i will find that kind of deal in SD.

Drae answers:

In Santo Domingo you have a couple choices of gyms. Gold’s (no nonsense and the best), Body Shop (lots of high tech stuff and a pool), and Body and Health. Oh yes, Body Shop actually has two location. So, if you want to go to a gym, those are you best choices.

There is no such thing as a licensed personal trainer in the Dominican Republic. Generally, a personally trainer means a meat head, that’s pumped up really big on steroids, and knows nothing about physiology, kinesiology, or nutrition. Then there is also about a 50/50 chance that he knows anything about proper form when it comes to lifting weights.

The price of these guys, I’m not really sure. But they are cheap. I’m sure it’s way less than $100 USD per month.

Now, if you want a “real” US certified personal trainer I know of one. And one only. Yep, that’s one in the entire country that I’m aware of. But I dont know everyone, so it would be safe to assume there may be 2-3 more in the whole country.

She charges about $100USD per hour. I know she comes to your house and it’s 1 on 1. I also know she only does women at the moment. Maybe that will change in the future, I’m not sure. Remember, the rich here are very very rich. And money is no object.

If you want to lift, go to a gym and make some friends. Find someone to work out with that’s at about the same level as you. I wouldn’t waste my money on a personal trainer if I was you, unless maybe you are just starting out. If you’ve been lifting for any time and know what you are doing. Dont hire a personal trainer here. You’ll just be throwing your money away.

Steven asks…

How do you get a personal trainer without gym membership?

I am not sure how to tone up or the different body toning exercises like squat or leg lifts. I think a personal trainer for a few sessions might help to show me how to do them properly. I don’t want to spend money on gym or trainers. How do I hire a trainer for a few sessions, and how much do they cost? Any advice on how to learn about toning exercises would be hepful.

Drae answers:

They’ll generally charge a base price and around 50 p/h on that to come to your house, look in a business directory or google search private personal trainers in your area.

If you want to save your money though, Google is your friend. Use it and love it! There’s thousands of sites with exercise plans and videos all over youtube showing you how to do those exercises.

Technique isn’t a huge issue for light weight squats and such, trainers are only really essential if you started learning how to do olympic weight lifting exercises or something – because bad technique on them leads to injury.

Robert asks…

Where can i find a personal dog trainer?

I live in San Jose California and I wanted to find a good personal dog trainer for my 5 month old female pitbull. I would like to teach my pitbull to be friendly towards my 2 other dogs (female shitzu and male chihuahua). She currently tries playing with them but she seems to aggressive and I’m scared that she will end up hurting them. I wouldn’t mind taking her to classes but I think that a personal trainer would be much more useful. Any help will be appreciated.

Drae answers:

Ask at the vetinary office. Dont take her to classes until you are sure how she will react with others. Good luck!!

Michael asks…

How do you become a personal fitness trainer?

I am a Program Coordinator for a Summer Youth Employment Program. One of my students is interested in becoming a personal trainer. This one is out of my field. I’d like to give him info on how to beomce one.

How do you become a personal trainer? Do you have to go to a 4 year college or trade school for it?

Drae answers:

Not at all. You have to take a test for certification. The test is pretty difficult though. You need to be able to identify all the muscle groups, and then depending on the certification he goes for, he’ll have to identify exercises that go with those muscle groups. THen he’ll have to get experience, and then he’s a personal trainer.
