Your Questions About Muscular Strength

Joseph asks…

What exercises can i do for building my muscular strength in basketball?

Im trying to build up my muscular strength for basketball im trying to improve my upper body strength cuz im not that tall so i need to be able to throw my weight around. Thanks

Drae answers:

If you want to throw your weight around, you actually need better LOWER body strength. I weighed 145 lbs at 6′ in high school, but all of my strength was in my legs – played against guys 6’6 225 but since my legs were strong it wasn’t bad – outrebounded every one of them. But, to your point, upper body strength is also important…

2 absolute MUST exercises for any athlete:
Lower Body–
1. Squats
2. Lunges (can actually be more beneficial than squats when done properly)

For your upper body…(btw – your triceps are actually more important for shooting than your biceps)

1. Pull-Ups (best overall upper body exercise) – no substitutes, though…if you can’t do one, do assisted machine pull-ups or have a friend “push” you up from your legs while you do the pull-ups. — pull-ups work a bigger group of muscles than bench presses do

2. Military Presses (somewhat simulates going up with the ball) — deltoids/shoulders

3. Dips — triceps and chest

4. Bench Press — chest, triceps, stabilizer muscles

Of course there are others to add to this…but at a minimum, these 6 exercises should be included in your training.

Additionally, work on your CORE STRENGTH — if your core is weak, the rest of your body is weaker. A stronger core helps the rest of your muscles work more efficiently, so it improves your strength in all other areas besides your core as well. (trunk twists, swiss ball crunches, leg raises, etc.)

I’ve got more in-depth descriptions of these exercises on a section of my website designated to basketball strength at:

Good luck to you

Sandy asks…

What are some Muscular Strength tests for children?

I am developing a fitness unit for my students at school and am in need of a test for Muscular Strength. With my older kids I have used the 1RM, but don’t feel that is appropriate for 12-15 year olds.

What tests can I do that purely test Muscular Strength? I was thinking of a push-up test using a time limit such as number of push-ups in 30secs, but that is moving more towards Muscular Endurance.

Ideas?

Drae answers:

Try the pushup one
but like do it how many they can do non-stop but not like fast paced ones
real slow nose to the bottom…that kinda thing
and do sprints

Steven asks…

What not to do while doing muscular strength?

I need help on this because my P.E. teacher is making us do this essay on it and i don’t know what not to do while you are doing muscular strength.
Help me i am desperate!

Drae answers:

Something important that you should never do when deadlifting is lift from your back rather than your knees as you can get seriously injured. You should also never lift a weight that is too heavy for you as it will strain you. Also you should not work out the same muscle group several days in a row as they need time to recover in between training.

Jenny asks…

What are some foods that can be eaten to increase muscular strength and appearance?

I’m 16 years old, i have a good build as it is now but i want a nice build by summer time, i workout for approx an hour every night, and im curious as if there are specific foods that can help me gain more muscular strength and apperence faster such as foods high in protein or ? Any help would be great about gaining muscular strength

Drae answers:

Im trying to do the same thing. I want to get into great shape before summer but am already in pretty good shape. Buying whey protein will not strictly help you get the chiseled look your going for. To achieve a good muscular look you should try to take in about 4000 calories a day of good healthy food not McDonald’s, empty calories won`t work. If you just google muscle building meal plans or workout meal plans something to that effect there is a bunch of sample meal plans with a list of the foods you should eat etc. Hope your successful and good luck!

Drae answers:

Almost all sports, especially team sports require these two aspects. Football (American football), football (soccer), rugby, basketball, baseball, tennis, badminton, lacrosse, track/field, hockey, etc.
