muscle cramps?
i have been having really bad muscle cramps in my left foot and left hand alot recently. i will have about 4-5 cramps a day that are very painful and bothersome. i’ve had cramps before but not to this extreme and not this often. also, is it odd that im only getting these cramps in my left side? what are the causes of such extreme muscle cramps? thanks

Drae answers:
My entire family suffers from muscle cramps but by accident I found something that stops 99% of mine.
I started taking a good one a day vitamin and notice it reduced my cramps a little within a week. So, I started taking two one a day vitamins (one in the morning with breakfast and one the evening with dinner) and noticed about a 75% drop in my cramps.
Then, I read in a book somewhere that B-12 vitamins help persons with cramps. So, off to the store I went and I started taking one daily B-12 vitamin with my breakfast.
Within two weeks, I stopped having cramps and only get one every couple months now.
I’m sure each person has different reason for getting cramps but apparently mine was some vitamin deficiency that is manageable by taking a general one a day/B-12 vitamins.
Good luck!

Muscle Cramps?
I get muscle cramps easy. I am well hydrated but for some reason i get them. can someone tell my why this is and how to prevent them or if i was to get them how to get rid of them quickly

Drae answers:
Even if you were well hydrated, you maybe lacking in some mineral or vitamen. Usually it is pottasium which you can get from bannannas. Or you can get tablets from the pharmacy. If that doesnt help. I would see the doc.

Laura asks…
How do I prevent pulled muscle cramps after workouts?
I don’t go to the gym much but when I do, I use the weights and stuff after my cardio.
I went gung-ho on the weights and woke up this morning with some mild pain in my right arm and chest (worked with the chest muscle machine a lot yesterday).
How do I prevent these cramps from happening again? Are there any stretching exercises for the upper body as well as the lower body that can prevent cramping? Or do I need to lower the weights and the reps?

Drae answers:
The soreness is caused by two reasons you overworked yourself before you were ready and lactic acid build up in you muscles. You can help that lactic acid build up by making sure that you are drinking plenty of water and as for overworking you muscles you can 1 of 2 things decrease the amount of weight you are doing but keep the reps and sets the same or leave the weight the same and decrease the number of reps and sets.

What is your favorite remedy for muscle cramps?
Here’s some free advice.
First. Stretch the cramped muscle; if the muscle is bending a joint, straighten it; if the muscle is straightening a joint, bend it. Bottom of foot; bend toes toward head. Back of calf; bend ankle so toes are up. Back of the thigh; straighten knee.
Second. Dilute a teaspoonful or two of vinegar with enough water to make it drinkable; drink it; the cramps should be gone in less than a minute. I don’t think the type of vinegar matters; they all have the active ingredient—acetic acid.
Third. Drug companies and their henchmen in the medical profession want to keep this cheap home remedy a secret so they can charge an arm and a leg to treat your arm or leg. So, after you try this, tell all your friends if it worked.
Fourth. Carry a small amount of vinegar on long hikes or bicycle trips; the little plastic vinegar packs at some fast-food restaurants are perfect.
Fifth. Take a daily mineral supplement and eat foods that contain potassium, like bananas.
Cherie, I’d like to know more about the wheat bag. Is it like whole grain wheat in a bag? Do you heat it and apply to the cramped muscle? Do you moisten it? How long do you apply it, and how soon do you get relief?

Drae answers:
I really like the vinegar idea – it makes sense. I was going to suggest taking potassium in the form of salts if it is an ongoing problem – although providing through diet is obviously a better way (unless you dont like foods high in potassium) As a sports therapist I obviously would recommend massage followed by heat (bath or wheat bag) Next time anyone comes to me with cramp I’ll pass on your tip and see what happens – Thanks
